Durga Puja celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of divine good over destructive evil (dharma over adharma). It also honors divine feminine energy (Shakti) and marks the goddess’s annual journey from Mount Kailash to her earthly home.
The Legend of Mahishasura Mardini
According to the Devi Mahatmya (Markandeya Purana), the primary mythological origin unfolds in three stages:
The Boon of Invincibility: Mahishasura, the king of the Asuras (demons), performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma. When granted a wish, he asked for immortality. Brahma explained that every mortal must face death, so Mahishasura craftily requested that no man, god, demon, or beast could ever kill him—assuming no woman would ever possess the strength to defeat him.
The Reign of Terror: Emboldened by his near-invulnerability, Mahishasura attacked the heavens (Swarga Lok), defeated Lord Indra, and drove the gods (Devas) from their realm, establishing tyranny over earth and heaven alike.
The Creation of Durga: Powerless under Brahma's boon, the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—along with the other Devas, pooled their fiery spiritual energy (Tejas). From this collective cosmic radiance emerged Goddess Durga (an incarnation of Adi Parashakti). Each deity gifted her their divine attributes and celestial weapons: Shiva gave his trident (Trishula), Vishnu his discus (Sudarshana Chakra), Varuna a conch, Vayu a bow and arrows, and Himavat provided a lion as her mount.
The battle raged for ten days, during which Mahishasura repeatedly shifted shapes into an elephant, a lion, and a wild water buffalo. On the tenth day (Vijaya Dashami), Durga pinned him down and pierced his chest with her trident, earning the title Mahishasuramardini (the slayer of Mahishasura).
The Two Major Cultural Narratives
Beyond the celestial battle, two deeply rooted traditions shape how Durga Puja is observed:
|
The celebrations culminate on Vijaya Dashami, when idols are immersed in water bodies (Visarjan), symbolizing the Goddess's return to Mount Kailash with Lord Shiva, while devotees share sweets, seek blessings from elders, and greet one another with Subho Bijoya.
The 10-day period—commencing with Mahalaya and ending with Vijaya Dashami—parallels the nine forms of the divine mother worshipped during Navratri alongside the specific high-energy ceremonial rituals of Durga Puja.
