UPI (PhonePe, Google Pay):
What Is Digital Currency and Has It Launched Nationwide?
In India, official digital currency is known as the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) or Digital Rupee (e₹), issued directly by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Unlike private cryptocurrencies, the Digital Rupee is legal tender and holds the exact same legal status and face value as physical paper banknotes and coins.
Launch Status: The RBI launched the retail pilot (e₹-R) in December 2022.
Current Availability: It is operating as a large-scale, nationwide pilot across participating commercial banks (including State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Punjab National Bank). Anyone with an account and a debit card at a participating bank can access and use it through their bank’s dedicated Digital Rupee application.
How to Keep and Manage Digital Currency in a Mobile Wallet
The Digital Rupee is stored on your smartphone inside an e₹ Mobile Wallet application provided by your bank.
Download the App: Install your bank's official Digital Rupee app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store (e.g., SBI eRupee by State Bank of India, ICICI Digital Rupee, or Kotak Digital Rupee).
Device Verification: The app verifies the SIM card and mobile number registered with your savings bank account.
Set Up Wallet PIN: Create a 6-digit Wallet PIN and configure biometric authentication (fingerprint or face unlock) for authorization.
Load Currency Tokens: Select Load Digital Rupee. You can choose the exact denominations you want (e.g., e₹500, e₹200, e₹100, e₹50, e₹20, e₹10, or coins). The amount is debited from your linked savings account and credited as digital tokens into your phone's wallet.
Recovery: If your mobile phone is damaged or lost, the funds are not lost; they can be restored on a new handset using the same registered phone number and SIM verification.
How Digital Rupee Differs from UPI, PhonePe, and ATM Cash
| Feature | Digital Rupee (e₹) | UPI / PhonePe / GPay | ATM Cash Withdrawal |
Key Benefits
For Citizens:
Zero Transaction Failures: Because transactions are peer-to-peer token transfers rather than bank-to-bank settlements, there are no "pending payment" glitches or bank core-banking server timeouts.
Cash-Like Resilience: Offers the speed of digital payments combined with the settlement finality of physical cash. Future expansions allow transactions in remote areas without cellular data.
No Intermediary Risk: The money is backed directly by the sovereign guarantee of the RBI, carrying zero risk of bank insolvency.
For the Country and Economy:
Huge Cost Savings: Printing, transporting, securing, storing, and shredding physical banknotes costs the Indian financial system thousands of crores each year. Digital tokens eliminate these logistics entirely.
Elimination of Counterfeiting: Digital tokens are cryptographically secured and unique, making fake currency impossible.
Targeted Welfare Delivery (Programmability): The government can issue programmable e₹ for specific uses (such as fertilizer subsidies, school books, or healthcare vouchers) that can only be redeemed at authorized outlets.
Cross-Border Efficiency: Simplifies and significantly reduces fees for international remittances and trade settlements by bypassing expensive global intermediary bank networks.
Union Bank of India (UBI) has launched the Digital Rupee (e₹) as part of the Reserve Bank of India's retail CBDC pilot project.
