Police freeze 2 bank accounts of ex-armyman-Times of India
PUNE: The crime branch of the Pune police has frozen two bank accounts of former lance naik Sandip Gurav who has been arrested for allegedly cheating a large number of youths from Sangli and Kolhapur districts to the tune of Rs 1.14 crore by promising them jobs at the Bombay Engineering Group & Centre (BEG) at Khadki here."We have frozen Gurav's two savings bank accounts at the State Bank of India's Gargoti and Ichalkaranji branches in Kolhapur district. The statements of his accounts reveal that he has a balance of Rs 2.39 lakh and Rs 7,498 respectively in the two branches," senior inspector Anil Patil of the anti extortion cell of the Pune crime branch said on Friday.
"Gurav had purchased a bungalow at Aptenagar in Kolhapur for Rs 52 lakh with the money generated by running the jobs scam in April. He had paid Rs 28 lakh and Rs 22 lakh through online banking to the bungalow owner. He had sought time to pay the balance of Rs 2 lakh," he said. Patil said that Gurav said under interrogation that he had also purchased gold ornaments worth Rs 6.5 lakh for his wife and that he kept Rs 20 lakh in fixed deposits.
The suspect claimed to have returned Rs 8 lakh to some of the youths at Kavthemahankal in Sangli district prior to his arrest, Patil said, adding that Gurav has admitted to have committed the offence "because of financial constraints".
Police said they were in the process of recording the statements of more youths to determine the exact amount of cash paid to Gurav.
Gurav was arrested by the Kolhapur police on Wednesday and handed over to the Pune police, who were camping there. The suspect was brought to Pune on Thursday and has been remanded in police custody till July 11.
Meanwhile, the residents of Sangli felicitated Patil for arresting Gurav.
