  • Post-2015 AQR Impact (Peak in FY 2017–18): Following the RBI's comprehensive reassessment, recognition of hidden stressed assets surged:
    • PSU Banks: Gross NPAs peaked at ~₹8.95 lakh crore in March 2018 (Gross NPA ratio ~14.6%).
    • Private Sector Banks: Gross NPAs rose to ~₹1.29 lakh crore in March 2018 (Gross NPA ratio ~4.7%).
    • Total Across All Commercial Banks: Reached an all-time peak of ~₹10.36 lakh crore (11.2% of total advances).

Recoveries, Key Corporate Cases, and Recovery Mechanisms

Over the last decade, commercial banks and financial institutions have recovered over ₹10 lakh crore through formal statutory mechanisms, debt resolutions, and statutory enforcement.

  • Primary Legal Mechanisms Utilized:
    • Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC, 2016): Yielded over ₹3.4 lakh crorevia resolution plans and enterprise asset transfers under the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
    • SARFAESI Act & Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs): Enforced direct collateral and property sales without mandatory court intervention.
    • Enforcement Directorate (ED) & Special Courts: Attached, confiscated, and restituted over ₹19,000 crore worth of assets back to public sector banks in high-profile economic offender cases.
  • Major Asset-Sale Recoveries from Defaulted Entities:
    • Essar Steel: Acquired by ArcelorMittal via IBC; lenders recovered ~₹42,000 crore (out of ~₹49,000 crore admitted debt).
    • Bhushan Steel: Acquired by Tata Steel; recovered ~₹35,200 crore (out of ~₹56,000 crore debt).

    • Nirav Modi / PNB Fraud: Over ₹1,000+ crore recovered through auctions of luxury real estate, jewelry, and offshore assets.

Bank Financials: 2008–2015 Losses vs. Recent Net Profits

  • 2008–2015 Era (Concealed Stress & Rising Provisions):
    • Commercial banks did not post massive aggregate accounting losses initially because bad loans were systematically restructured through mechanisms like Corporate Debt Restructuring (CDR).
    • As stress mounted, Public Sector Banks incurred massive provisioning hits, culminating in net cumulative losses exceeding ₹2.07 lakh crore between FY 2015–16 and FY 2019–20 once true NPAs were officially recognized.
  • Last Five Years (Turnaround & Record Profits):
    • Following cleanup, recovery, and bank recapitalization, Indian commercial banks returned to historic profitability.
    • In FY 2023–24, total net profit of Scheduled Commercial Banks exceeded ₹3.1 lakh crore (PSU banks accounted for ~₹1.41 lakh crore, while private banks posted ~₹1.7 lakh crore).
    • Over the last 5 fiscals combined, total cumulative net profits across all commercial banks have exceeded ₹8.5 lakh crore.

Private Banks That Collapsed or Required Resolution Due to Faulty Lending

  • Yes Bank (2020): Placed under a statutory moratorium by the RBI after facing a severe capital adequacy crisis caused by aggressive corporate underwriting to high-risk groups (DHFL, Reliance ADAG, Cox & Kings). It was rescued via an RBI-directed reconstruction plan led by State Bank of India (SBI) and a consortium of financial institutions.
  • Lakshmi Vilas Bank (2020): Experienced acute solvency deterioration following severe corporate governance failures, rising bad loans (such as loans secured against Religare promoter FDs), and continuous losses. The RBI merged LVB with DBS Bank India.
  • Global Trust Bank (2004): Collapsed due to speculative capital market exposure and large corporate lending irregularities; it was amalgamated with the state-owned Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC).
  • Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank (2019): Though an urban co-operative bank, it collapsed after masking over 70% of its entire loan book (~₹6,500 crore) to a single defaulting real estate entity (HDIL); it was later reconstructed into Unity Small Finance Bank.
